Essay

Using examples of your case studies, discuss the issues and patterns which enable your institution to thrive as a business.

“Is it not the film industry, but film business.”

The case study i am working with is working title films. The patterns and issues in the film business have to both be successful as well as profitable.

Working title films produced the film Wild child made in 2008. It’s genre is a romantic comedy and working title films are especially good at making these types of films, they have made others such as: Definitely, maybe, Love Actually, Notting Hill and 40 Days 40 Nights. It has been successful in producing all these films and they have all reached a huge audience.

The producers of Wild Child are Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Diana Phillips. The key producers would have been Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner as they are not only the co-owners of Working Title Films but are also the main producers of the other films listed above.

Using the cast as a way of appealing to the audience is an effective way of getting the film out there. In Wild Child the main actress who the film is based on is Emma Roberts, she was recognized as a star from her role as Addie Singer in the nickelodeon television series Unfabulous. She also launched her solo singing career by recording two songs for the soundtracks of ice princess and aquamarine. S by using Emma Roberts as the main character is encourages all the young fans to go and watch her film. Its appealing to her target audience and its genre is similar to that of her tv series.

Another way the production company working title films have managed to thrive as a business company is due to its music. they usually use music or soundtracks for the film from previous artists such as the song "Say It Right" which was written and performed by well known female artist Nelly Furtado. Also other songs included are sung by other famous female artists, Rihanna, Sugababes and Adele.

The usual budget that working title films stick to are in there millions and this fits in with many of the films they have made. Pride and prejudice which had a budget of £28million which is at the higher end of the market and whereas Shuan of the Dead which had a budget of £4million is at thelower end of the market. But from this you can see that there will be vareations in amountsrangeing from large to small.

Production - Ali G in Da House

I will be looking at the film Ali G in Da House which is a film produced by working title films. This film was made in 2002 and is a comedy starring Sasha Baron Cohen. The film is about a Ali G who becomes an obstacle between the Deputy Prime Minister and his bid to get the Prime Minister out and get himself in. However he defies the DPM's expectations and will disgrace himself and is embraced by the nation as the voice of youth and 'realness'.

Working Title Films

I have chosen Working Title Films as my case study. the main people involved in this company are; Sarah Radclyff, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. They were very successful in creating popular British-based films of international appeal. They have strong marketing links with America and European companies. The company is also commited to low budget films and new writers.
